Traffic management and public transport for the Heidelberg Christmas Market
To ensure that all visitors can enjoy the Heidelberg Christmas Market safely and without restrictions, the City of Heidelberg—together with the event organiser Heidelberg Marketing and the Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr GmbH — will introduce an adapted traffic management plan this year. The city strongly recommends that Christmas Market visitors travel by public transport and make use of the various parking garage options available throughout the city.
Regulations around Karlsplatz – Parking garages P12 and P13 remain accessible
During the Heidelberg Christmas Market, Karlsplatz will once again be transformed into a winter stage with an ice rink. To ensure safe pedestrian crossings within the event area toward Marktplatz and Kornmarkt, the Hauptstraße between Karlsplatz and Kornmarkt cannot be accessed by vehicles during the market’s opening hours. Access to the Karlsplatz parking garage (P13) will remain open. Delivery traffic is permitted as usual between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m., outside of the Christmas Market’s opening hours, including in the Burgweg area and along Hauptstraße toward the Mönchsgasse crossing.
Eastbound, Bremeneckgasse will be fully closed from the intersection with Neue Schlossstraße toward the mountain railway. However, continued travel through Neue Schlossstraße as well as access to the Kornmarkt/Schloss parking garage (P12) will remain possible.
Municipal parking guidance system offers early information on parking availability
The municipal parking guidance system provides up-to-date occupancy information for all parking garages via display boards throughout the city and online. If garages appear as fully occupied, Heidelberg Christmas Market visitors are strongly encouraged to switch to alternative garages early. The online service can also be conveniently used with standard mobile navigation systems. The portal is available here: www.parken.heidelberg.de.
Public Transport: Good accessibility despite adjusted routes
During the Heidelberg Christmas Market period, the Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr GmbH will adjust the routes of lines 20, 29, 33, 36 as well as the Moonliner M2 and M5, and modify some stops. The goal is to maintain access to all key stops while ensuring sufficient capacity and passenger comfort. Detailed information on public transport services during the Heidelberg Christmas Market is available here: www.rnv-online.de/fahrtinfo/verkehrsmeldungen.
To ensure convenient access to the Old Town, the will set up two replacement stops approximately 30 meters east of the “Peterskirche” stop. The bus stops “Universitätsplatz” and “Marstallstraße (Steig C)” will not be served during the market. The “Marstallstraße” stop on the B37 will serve as a replacement for both “Marstallstraße Steig C” and “Universitätsplatz”.
Easy arrival – best by bus or train
Despite the adjustments required by the Christmas Market organisers for safety reasons, Heidelberg’s Old Town remains easily accessible via the local stops (including Marstallstraße on the B37, Peterskirche, and Neckarmünzplatz) as well as via Bismarckplatz and the Altstadt S-Bahn station.
