Short facts

  • Heidelberg

On display are objects of the Geological-Paleontological Collection and the Mineralogical Collection.

Together, the collections comprise around 300,000 minerals, rocks, and fossils, including unique exhibits such as the lower jaw of Homo heidelbergensis.

In the geological part of the museum, you can marvel at the rocks and the development of the earth over the last 4.5 billion years from the Precambrian to the present day.

In the paleontological section, the focus is on the history of life over the last 500 million years. The museum highlights various fossil finds from corresponding epochs.

The mineralogical section features a collection of minerals and rocks drawn from important collections, including Rosenbusch, Goldschmidt, Ramdohr, Leonhard, and Springer. In addition to a systematic collection of minerals, the exhibitions offer an insight into the diversity of modern mineralogy.

The formation of the solar system, the structure of the Earth, the dynamics of the Earth's interior, and the formation of minerals and rocks are presented in separate thematic areas.
