Königstuhl (The King's Seat)

Short facts

  • Heidelberg

The Königstuhl is the 567-meter high local mountain of Heidelberg.

On the Königstuhl you will find an oasis of peace and relaxation, which at the same time offers a fantastic view of Heidelberg, the Neckar valley, and the Rhine plain.

In the warm season, it is between 5 and 6 degrees cooler here than in the city.

From the castle, a steep staircase (also called the ladder of heaven) and, since 1907, the funicular railway leads up to the Königstuhl: from the Kornmarkt Valley Station, you go via the castle and Molkenkur stations up to the summit.

Alternatively, bus line 39 also runs hourly from Bismarck Square to the Königstuhl from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

At the top, visitors can expect not only breath-taking views but also many attractions: the Fairy Tale Paradise theme park with 48,000 square meters promises magical hours for the whole family, the falconry Tinnunculus organizes daily public flight demonstrations and you can immerse yourself in the fascination of astronomy at the famous national observatory.

Guests who prefer to hike will find many attractive destinations and routes for every fitness level departing from the Königstuhl. Two very special forest trails have been created here: the "Via Naturae" and the forest adventure trail. All routes are marked.
