The square, redesigned in 2001, is located in the Old Town not far from the Old Bridge.
The synagogue square was the site of the Jewish house of worship, which was burned down by the National Socialists on the night of the pogrom on November 10, 1938. The architect Hermann Behaghel had designed the synagogue, built in 1877/78, after the prayer hall, which had been housed in the former house "Zur blauen Lilie" since 1714, had become too small.
The memorial, newly designed by the city of Heidelberg with the support of a citizens' initiative, shows the ground plan of the destroyed synagogue in white marble paving. Grey granite marks its windows and entrance door. Twelve partially illuminated sandstone cubes represent the former pews and recall the twelve tribes of Israel.
